Top 5 Things to do as Austin Reopens

Please keep social distancing in mind as you go about any of these activities! Go to your favorite restaurant for a meal. Now that local businesses are reopening it has never been a better time to support your favorite restaurants whether it be a chain or a local favorite. Personal standouts for me that I plan on visiting include the original Chuy’s for some creamy jalapeño salsa and Homeslice Pizza for a delicious margherita pizza. Other restaurants to check out as reopening take place include Amy’s ice cream located across the city, Mighty Fine Burger located on the city’s extremities, and Casino el Camino out on sixth street. Head to your favorite swimming holes. Currently at the time of writing this certain swimming holes are closed or having their attendance limited by local officials. For example, Barton Springs is currently…

Swimming in Lady Bird Lake

Most people are unaware that it’s illegal to swim in Lady Bird Lake. This law was passed in 1964 after two drownings occurred in the lake. The stronger than expected current and large underwater debris uphold the danger of swimming in this lake today. While you can’t swim in Lady Bird lake, here’s a list of watering holes where you can legally cool down: Barton Springs Barton Creek Greenbelt Deep Eddy Municipal Pool (cash only) Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis (ages 18+) Hamilton Pool (reservations required) Jacob’s Well (reservation required)

Awesome Art!

While there is no shortage of nightlife in Austin, I’m often asked what activities there are to do during the day. One suggestion is to search for the street art that’s teeming around the city. While I could tell you where to find Austin’s Instagram famous murals, it’s more fun to randomly stumble upon these treasures. You just might discover a new favorite. Here are some streets to explore: 1st, 6th, South Congress, Lamar, and The Drag (on Guadalupe). Of course, the one place you must visit is the Hope Outdoor Gallery. Bring a can of spray paint with you as these cement walls invite you to embrace your inner graffiti artist. Be sure to visit soon, because the graffiti park is set to move to a new location later in 2019.
